Sonia started dancing when she was 17. She was inspired by a South American friend in the way she danced and responded to the music with such joy, celebration and intricate body movements.
Sonia was drawn to the drum rhythm and glamorous outfits and would watch belly dance clips and try to mimic the movements. It was only when she ventured out of her comfort zone and did some belly dance classes that she could really feel and understand the movements. From the very first lesson the drums spoke to her. Her body enjoyed responding.
When Sonia moved to Canberra, she wanted to continue dancing and came across Brazilian Samba. "I loved the music, I loved the movement, I loved fast footwork and I loved the challenge".
Along with Brazilian Samba, she spent a year training in other styles including Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton and Brazilian Axe.
Even though she enjoyed each style, nothing made me feel more alive than Brazilian Samba.
She wanted more than moves. Sonia was looking for a feeling, culture, passion and style and
was opened up to all of this after joining Subsdance Dance Studio.
Sonia was invited to join the Glamourosas in 2013 in which she has loved dancing with this group of beautiful and unique women, who all have their own dance stories.
Sonia's dance journey has made her fall in love with Brazilian music and culture which is now part of her daily life.
After visiting Brazil twice, Sonia looks forward to returning, and claims it is her favourite place in the world where the music takes over and dancing is such a joyful natural experience.
"The music and drums take over my body and I can't help it, it creates a happiness that I want to share with everyone" - Sonia
