Jamie was a late bloomer when it came to discovering her love for dance. She tried a number of different styles when she was growing up, but it wasn’t until she was in her late teens that she decided to try Belly dance and Brazilian Samba with her friends. She quickly fell in love with all things dance and never looked back.
Jamie tried a number of dance styles when she was younger including Ballet, Irish dancing and Hip Hop, but always felt more like a baby giraffe than a dancer. Jamie truly fell in love in her in her late teens when she started Latin dancing with her friends for fun and then never stopped. She enjoys a number of dance styles including Bachata, Brazilian Samba, Reggaeton and Spanish Flamenco. Jamie has been dancing Brazilian Samba since 2010 and also travelled to Rio de Janiero, her first trip to Brazil, in 2016 which was an enlightening and humbling experience.
Jamie first began Brazilian Samba by chance with her friends, one of which was the beautiful Glamourosa Jess, because it fit in with their University schedule. It was this mysterious unknown dance and when she turned up to her very first class she had no idea what to expect. One class was all it took—she was addicted! The music, culture and challenge was like nothing she had ever experienced—it was a whole new world! Since that very first lesson Jamie’s Brazilian Samba journey has seen her perform, compete and travel to Brazil and she looks forward to the many opportunities to come.
Jamie’s best Brazilian Samba experience was dancing under the stars to live drums on the cobble stone streets of Ilha Grande, Brazil with her fellow sambista, Sonia. She says there is no better feeling than the energy created by a live band and the small community parading with them.
"Samba is more than just a dance. It is an evolving beast, a powerful energy and an indescribable feeling." - Jamie Callaghan
